Restoring the window frame.

Beautiful day today so no excuses for not getting on with it. Carrying on with the work from yesterday I have to keep working on the window frame to put the strength back into it. This has to be my main focus because if stormy weather arrives again then covering the front of the caravan with a tarpaulin would mean that it would take a hell of a bashing and the frame just is not up to that. The main problem is that the most complicated piece is a mess. Just a lump of soft rotten wood, barely in shape. I found two pieces of plywood that I was able to glue together to achieve the correct thickness. This picture shows the rotted wood I need as a template laying on the plywood board I made up.

I gently eased the three pieces of rotting wood apart, using a hacksaw blade to cut the screws that are holding it together. When I get them separated I can lay them on the plywood to draw around them. Then I cut them out with a Jigsaw.

Once I have them cut out I gave them a thorough lashing with Cuprinol wood preserver....just in case dampness gets back in. After that I cut out a piece of plywood to replace the missing area of floor. This piece of board I am going to stick on underneath the van. It is heavily saturated with wood preserver and will get a coat of tar or some such to guard against water spraying onto it. Once I fix it in place I can then start to rebuild the layers (polystyrene/plywood) which will make a new floor area.

I also cut two new pieces of timber that go down the left hand side of the window. This picture shows them all drying off in the sun at end of day.

After i took this picture I fixed one of the upright timbers to the window frame and started to re-attach the inner ply to it. This gave the frame a little strength back, and it felt good to be building something back on rather than pulling it all off! I haven't quite turned the corner yet though, there are still those rotten uprights in the wall panels to the front of the side windows. They will be the turning point I believe. Once I get them replaced I have the worst of it done.
Friday evening now, so after wrapping the van up for the night and updating the website, it is time to go and share a few well-deserved glasses of malt whisky with my brother - we live next door to one another so it is a regular event heh heh. Friday night sees family and friends pop in for an evening of chat and the odd beverage in his garage. I will post a picture of the garage sometime because it would be hard to describe it in words. Suffice to say it has more in common with a well run pub than anything you would want to put a car in. Cheers!
