Now that the frame is off the front of the van I can sort of see what needs to be done. Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed at what I have done and question whether or not I am capable of putting it back together again! The main reason I am making this website is to (hopefully) help someone else who might be contemplating rooting out the rot. It's hardly going to be helpful if I cant manage to put it together again heh heh. Ok, one of the difficult jobs is cutting timber to suit. Some of the wood is 7/8ths of an inch square...some is 1 and 3/8ths by 1 inch etc. Unbelievably I find wood that is 7/8ths thick and some other planks that are 1 and 3/8ths thick. All I have to do now is set the table saw up to rip lengths at the required thickness. There isn't an awful lot of timber involved so I don't think it would be too expensive if you took a cutting list to your local joiners shop and asked him to cut wood to required sizes. I start by gluing and screwing a piece of treated plywood underneath the rotted corner of flooring. On top of that I fix the frameing timbers and re-glue the polystyrene blocks in. It does feel good to be doing something positive.

Everything is set in place with solvent free no-nails glue stuff and then screwed from underneath. Now it is time to put some of the wood back in the wall panels. A lot of today was spent scraping the last remnants of wood and glue out of the spaces where the timbers sit. Now that they are clean and square I can bond the new timbers in using a proper caravan fixant and sealant. Builders mastic is not suitable...not all mastics will do. Be prepared to get the proper materials...you dont want to be back in here in ten months time again...do you? I used Sikaflex 512 to fix the timbers in, and clamped them in place to give them the best chance of setting.

I can do no more today as that is all the wood I have that is ready to go in. The other wood still hasnt dried after being soaked in Cuprinol. It takes me 45 minutes to square away all the saws, tools, chemical etc and to wrap the front of the van up. I sure hope that we dont get stormy weather before I get the front back on. I work shifts, so I wont get much done this week. I should be keen to get on with it by next weekend though. |
